Professor Ruth Stewart announced as EIS2020 Keynote Speaker
Ruth is the Director of the Africa Centre for Evidence at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa
CEI, along side co-hosts Monash University, are thrilled to announce Professor Ruth Stewart as keynote speaker at the Evidence and Implementation Summit in Sydney on October 21-22 2020. Ruth is the Director of the Africa Centre for Evidence situated at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. She was trained at the EPPI-Centre in London under the guidance of Prof Sandy Oliver and is the founder and Chairperson of the Africa Evidence Network, a pan-African network that showcases excellence within the African evidence-informed decision-making space. Her work has supported the increasing institutionalisation of evidence-use within South African government and she has assembled a global network that aims to build, enhance, and strengthen the African evidence-informed decision-making ecosystem.
Ruth’s work is guided by her vision of seeing evidence-use in decision-making contribute to the reduction of poverty and inequality in Africa. Holding an undergraduate degree in Anthropology from Cambridge University, UK, Professor Stewart graduated with her PhD in Education from the University of London. She is rated as a top researcher by the National Research Foundation of South Africa and has over 20 years' experience in working to support evidence-informed decision-making specifically through evidence synthesis methodologies, with a special focus on working with civil servants in various African contexts. She volunteers her time to share her expertise with others by serving on many boards or scientific advisory panels, such as the Centre of Excellence for Development Impact and Learning, the South African Sustainable Development Goals Hub at the University of Pretoria, and the Vaccines for Africa Wellcome Grant initiative at the University of Cape Town. Ruth also demonstrates her commitment to ensuring that the innovative approaches to supporting and advancing evidence-informed decision-making in Africa are represented and advocated for on the global stage by supervising postgraduate students around the world.
