Practice First: Keeping our children safe

The Centre for Evidence and Implementation (CEI) is working with the Office of the Senior Practitioner (OSP), New South Wales Department of Family and Community Services (FACS), to strengthen child protection practices and out-of-home-care for children in NSW.

Keeping children safe requires the ongoing collaboration of families, the community, government, and non-government sectors. Developed in 2011, Practice First helps these collaborations work together seamlessly to implement contemporary evidence, manage risks, and provide quality support for children.

CEI is working with OSP, FACS, to:

  • Develop an overarching strategy for implementing new evidence-based approaches to child protection successfully without disrupting current services for families
  • Ensure key stakeholders have the capacity and resources to implement new strategies successfully across local, central and district levels
  • Support the successful wide-spread implementation of Practice First

Practice First is in operation in 36 community service centres and three specialist units across NSW. Once fully evaluated, it will be implemented in all 86 community service centres. Project First is expected to bring long- term improvements to children’s lives and, where safe, keep more families together.
