Guidance developed by CEI for Youth Endowment Fund on evaluating place-based interventions has been cited in the latest edition of the UK Government's HM Treasury Magenta Book.
The Magenta Book is the British government's official evaluation guidance for civil servants, analysts and policymakers across departments when assessing the value, impact and implementation of policies, programs and projects.
Evaluating Place-Based Approaches: A review of methods used was published in 2023, and authored by current and former CEI staff Dr Stephanie Smith, Dr Michelle Irving, Georgina Mann, Professor Arild Bjørndal and Jane Lewis.
The guidance highlights how place-based approaches and other complex interventions can best be evaluated, drawing on key texts from the field, the advice of international experts, and the authors' own experience and commentary.
Place-based approaches are defined as collaborative long-term efforts operating in a defined geographic location, focused on local needs and attributes, involving multiple agencies, and engaging local communities in design and delivery.
